Can I Wear a Brown Belt With Black Pants

Is the "no brown shoes or belt with black pants" a myth?

Just for example some casual dockers alphas in black with dark brown belt and dark brown leather CDBs. With a grey sweater as a top. Is that going to really look fucked up? I can't see why.

Casual like black jeans or chinos looks fine with brown shoes. I do it all the time.

However when its a suit or a dress pant, I don't think it works. The formality of black is lost by the brown shoe.

This sums it up. I loooove my black skinny jeans and brown boots look. But formal stuff has rules, follow them.

level 1

In my opinion, the only real fashion rules are for formal wear and business attire. Everything else can be thrown out the window, although that doesn't mean it's bad advice.

level 2

Well said, especially that last clause. It's a good guideline even for casual clothes for people who don't know what they're doing yet, but not a hard and fast rule or anything. If you're fairly knowledgable about clothes and know what you think looks good, you can take or leave rules like that.

level 1

It's really more of a suiting rule.

level 1

It's kind of like a rule in the English language. There's more exceptions than examples.

level 1

It's a problem with darker browns. If your brown is lighter it looks OK. Navy would still match better with browns than black is though.

level 2

Definitely the exact opposite as chocolate brown is an easy match. You'll find many, many garments with both dark brown and black colors in their textile and pattern while you will find significantly less that feature light brown and black.

level 2

Interesting. I've always thought the opposite since I think it looks more discrete with darker browns. But I guess it just goes to show that it has more to do with personal taste when it comes to casual wear.

level 1

have you ever looked at someone, thought "damn, he's wearing brown shoes with black pants, fuck that guy!" no, right? The "what would I think of someone wearing x" is a very important test.

I probably would, however it's something I don't think I've ever seen. I know it's possible to do brown shoes with black pants, and possible to do navy pants with black shoes; however I think it's really, really difficult to pull off so I just avoid it. There are so many less dangerous options.

I would be that guy. Also goes for blue pants and black shoes.

My understanding is that: Pants match socks and Shoes match belt. 90% of complaints that I've ever heard about anyone's style is that they break the belt/shoes rule. I've actually never work the black pants with brown shoes, but I love the reverse.

level 1

It's a thing, especially in suits. You could do it in casual context but black and brown (regardless of their shades) just don't go together all that well in my opinion. Brown and brown on other hand...

level 1

I don't know if it's a myth, but I think it looks much better than khakis with black shoes, which is what I see all the time.

level 2

Eww I hate that too. It reminds me of a work uniform at a movie theater or food service industry.

level 1

Usually I will wear black with brown shoes only if it's a light brown, like a tan color. Other than that, IMO stay away from the color combination.

level 1

What belt with khakis? Anyone have a link to a cheapish decent one?

level 1

I hate this more than anything. Black and brown in general. The only think Im beginning to let slide is tan/camel.

I often wear my amber harness Iron Rangers with black jeans. It's a great look.
